Experience Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), affectionately known as the "Toy Train," is one of the most famous and romantic railways on the planet. Built between 1879 and 1881, the 2-foot narrow gauge tracks curve through the steep foothills of the Eastern Himalayas.
The train famously utilizes ingenious loops (such as Batasia Loop) and "Z-reverses" to conquer towering gradients without the use of cogwheels. Vintage "B-Class" steam engines, some over a century old, still puff proud plumes of steam as their whistles echo through the cedar and pine hills.
The most popular experience is the 2-hour "Joy Ride" round trip from Darjeeling to Ghoom (the highest railway station in India at 7,407 ft), which includes a 10-minute photo halt at Batasia Loop and a 30-minute visit to the DHR Railway Museum at Ghoom.
