Experience Punakha Dzong
Punakha Dzong, formally known as Pungtang Dechen Photrang ("The Palace of Great Happiness"), is widely considered the most beautiful and historically important fortress (Dzong) in Bhutan. Built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it served as the religious and administrative capital of Bhutan until the mid-1950s.
The fortress sits dramatically at the confluence of two sacred rivers: the Pho Chhu (father river) and the Mo Chhu (mother river). In spring, the whitewashed stone walls are framed by brilliant lavender-purple blossoms of jacaranda trees.
Punakha Dzong houses the sacred embalmed body of Zhabdrung and the holy Rangjung Kharsapani relic. It is also the site where all of Bhutan’s kings have been crowned, and where the royal wedding of King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck took place in 2011.
