Experience Thimphu Buddha Dordenma
Perched atop a hill within Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, the Buddha Dordenma is a gigantic 169-foot (51.5 meter) bronze statue of Shakyamuni Buddha. Overlooking the southern entrance to Thimphu valley, it is one of the largest Buddha rupas in the world.
Cast in bronze and gilded with pure gold leaf, the statue houses a miraculous secret: its interior contains 125,000 smaller gilded bronze Buddha statues—100,000 eight-inch statues and 25,000 twelve-inch statues—each also gilded in gold.
The monument fulfills two ancient Buddhist prophecies dating back to the 8th century, which foretold that a massive statue of Lord Buddha would be erected on this mountain ridge to radiate an aura of peace, happiness, and harmony to the entire world.
