Paro Taktsang, universally known as the "Tiger’s Nest," is the most iconic, sacred, and visually arresting landmark in the Kingdom of Bhutan. Clinging precariously to a sheer vertical granite cliff 3,000 feet above the floor of the Paro Valley, this temple complex was founded in 1692 around the sacred cave where Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) is said to have meditated in the 8th century.
According to legend, Guru Rinpoche flew to this high mountain ledge on the back of a celestial tigress to subdue local demons. He meditated in the cave for three years, three months, three weeks, three days, and three hours, introducing Buddhism to Bhutan.
The 4 to 5-mile round-trip hike winds through fragrant blue pine forests, passing whispering prayer wheels turned by mountain streams and thousands of colorful prayer flags. The view of the monastery across the deep chasm with a 200-foot waterfall cascading into the gorge is sheer magic.
