Situated at a forbidding altitude of 13,123 feet on the Kupup road between Tsomgo Lake and Jelep La Pass, Baba Harbhajan Mandir is one of the most remarkable and heartwarming shrines in India. It is dedicated to Major Harbhajan Singh, an Indian Army soldier who slipped and drowned in a glacier stream in 1968 while leading a mule column.
According to legend, the martyred soldier appeared in a dream to a fellow sepoy, directing search parties to the exact location of his body and requesting that a samadhi be built. Soldiers stationed on the Indo-China frontier firmly believe that Baba Harbhajan’s spirit continues to patrol the border, warning troops of impending enemy movements or avalanches days in advance.
Even Chinese commanders reportedly leave an empty chair in his honor at flag meetings. The shrine houses his preserved living quarters, polished boots, and uniform, which soldiers reverently maintain daily.
