Perched at an astonishing 17,800 feet above sea level just 5 kilometers south of the Tibetan border, Gurudongmar Lake is among the highest lakes in the entire world. Fed by glacial streams originating from Mount Siniolchu and the Kangchengyao range, its waters glow with an intense, otherworldly emerald-blue hue.
Revered as sacred by Buddhists, Sikhs, and Hindus alike, legend holds that Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) and later Guru Nanak visited this high plateau. Because the lake remained frozen all winter depriving locals of water, the Guru touched a section of the lake; to this day, that sacred spot never freezes even in temperatures as low as -35°C.
