Tsomgo Lake, revered by Sikkimese people as a sacred oval water body, is nestled dramatically amidst steep alpine mountains at an altitude of 12,400 feet. Sourced by melting glaciers, the lake remains frozen from January through March, turning into a breathtaking sheet of snow and crystalline ice.
According to ancient legend, Buddhist lamas used to study the changing colors of the lake’s water to forecast the future peace and prosperity of the kingdom. Today, fluttered by thousands of multi-colored prayer flags, the lake is also home to Brahminy ducks and rare migratory alpine birds.
Visitors can experience traditional rides on woolly, ornately decorated Yaks, ride the world-renowned Tsomgo Passenger Ropeway up to a dizzying 14,500 feet for sweeping views of the Indo-China frontier, and savor steaming Sikkimese momos and hot tea from local lakeside stalls.

By Air
Fly into Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or Pakyong Airport (PYG), drive to Gangtok (4-5 hrs), and take a pre-booked SUV to Tsomgo Lake.
By Train
Arrive at New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station, travel by cab to Gangtok, then embark on the high-altitude morning circuit.
