Experience Rumtek Monastery
Perched on a lush hilltop facing the capital city of Gangtok, Rumtek Monastery (also known as the Dharma Chakra Centre) is the largest and most spiritually significant Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Sikkim. Originally built in the 18th century and rebuilt in the 1960s by the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, it is the worldwide focal point of the Karma Kagyu lineage.
The monastery is an architectural masterpiece, closely modeled on the original Tsurphu Monastery in Tibet. Its main four-story building houses precious Buddhist art, including rare 1,000-year-old silk Thangkas, gold-plated statues, and sacred Buddhist scriptures (Kangyur and Tengyur).
Behind the main prayer hall stands the revered Golden Stupa, which enshrines the sacred bone relics of the 16th Karmapa. Visitors are welcomed by the resonant sound of long horns, chanting monks, and sweeping views of Gangtok across the valley.
